Dozens exposed to bacteria causing Legionnaires’ disease at Coach K’s fantasy camp

This was less like a fantasy camp and more like a public relations nightmare.

According to Duke, 94 people who attended the annual camp with legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski were likely exposed to the bacteria that causes Legionnaires’ disease. Attendees reported flu-like symptoms after the camp and suffered from fevers, muscle fatigue, nausea and respiratory issues.

The camp allows attendees – who each pay $12,500 – to play games at Cameron Indoor Stadium. It was held from Aug. 11-15.

This will be the last time the camp is hosted by Coach K, who will retire after this coming season and be replaced by assistant coach Jon Scheyer.

“Duke infectious disease specialists have worked with federal, state and local public health officials to identify the source of the exposure, which likely occurred in a training room in the Schwartz-Butters Building,” Duke said in a statement. “All the individuals who were exposed to the bacteria have been positively identified and have been contacted by Duke physicians.”
