Only 4% more NYPD workers received COVID vaccine in past month

The number of NYPD employees vaccinated against COVID-19 increased by just 4 percent in the past month, despite a department push and dire warnings about the highly contagious Delta variant.

New data shows 47 percent of the department’s workforce — which includes just under 35,000 uniformed officers and nearly 18,000 civilian members — is now fully vaccinated, a police spokeswoman said Friday.

That’s up a little over 2,100 employees, or just 4 percentage points, from four weeks ago, when the NYPD started to ramp up its reporting process amid a vaccine push and Big Apple COVID-19 increase.

The NYPD has struggled to get its immunization rate up — even though cops were among one of the first groups eligible for the vaccine.

Since May, a total of roughly 6,200 more members, or 12 percent of the workforce, have been fully vaccinated.

Last month, Police Commissioner Dermot Shea defended the department’s “abysmal” vaccination rate of 43 percent, saying that he believed the number to be higher, with officers getting the jab from their own doctors and going unreported.

Either way, vaccinated cops who may not be part of the official count could soon become accounted for, since the department is now mandating masks on the job — indoors and outdoors — if officers don’t have proof of the jab on file.

Police sources told The Post that cops who didn’t get the jab through the job could upload their vaccination card onto their employee profile and submit it to the Medical Division.

The new police mask mandate was issued on Tuesday evening department-wide telling officers if they flout the rules they will face discipline.

Cops have had a poor record of following masking guidelines throughout the pandemic, despite the virus forcing 20 percent in the rank-and-file to call out sick and quarantine during the first wave.

As of Friday, the coronavirus had claimed 60 members of the NYPD. It was also the leading cause of death for on-duty cops nationwide in 2020.

Police unions did not immediately respond to questions about any efforts to get their members vaccinated.
