Woman critical after Amish buggy hit by pickup truck in upstate New York

An Amish woman was thrown from her horse-drawn buggy in Upstate New York and left in critical condition when a pick-up truck slammed into the back of it, state police said.

Annie Hershberger, 29, was injured when she and her husband, Peter Hershberger, were hit outside a Big M supermarket around 8:20 p.m. Thursday in Alexandria, police said.

“The initial investigation indicates that an Amish horse and buggy attempted to enter the northbound lane of State Route 12 from the parking (lot) of the Big M and failed to yield the right of way to the northbound pickup truck,” state police said in a press release Friday.

Peter Hershberger, 36, was treated at Samaritan Medical Center in Alexandria Bay and released, troopers said.

Annie Hershberger was transferred to Update University Hospital in Syracuse where she was listed in critical condition.

It was not immediately clear how the two are related.

According to WWTI-TV, one of the two horses who had been pulling the buggy had to be euthanized at the scene. The other suffered minor injuries.
