A man waiting for the train at Manhattan’s Union Square subway station was hit in the head with a hammer in an unprovoked attack Friday night, police said.
The straphanger, who is in his 40s, was standing on the northbound Q train platform at 9:20 p.m. when a suspect struck him from behind with a blunt instrument believed to be a hammer, cops said.
The victim was taken to Bellevue Hospital with a head laceration and was in stable condition, cops said.
The suspect — a man wearing all black with white lettering on his shirt — fled the station, according to the NYPD.
It’s the second time in two days that a person was randomly attacked on a subway platform.
On Friday morning, a woman was beaten with a metal pole while waiting for the G train, the NYPD said.
