Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts inspires tributes from celeb fans
Fans and celebs alike were stunned when they heard the news Tuesday that Charlie Watts, the drummer for the Rolling Stones, died at 80.
“It is with immense sadness that we announce the death of our beloved Charlie Watts,” a statement from the band read. “He passed away peacefully in a London hospital earlier today surrounded by his family.”
The legendary rock outfit’s announcement continued, “Charlie was a cherished husband, father and grandfather and also a member of the Rolling Stones one of the greatest drummers of his generation.”
Emotional tributes from music lovers, A-list celebrities and civilians came pouring in on Twitter after the news of Watts’ passing.
Mick Jagger, 78, simply shared a photo of a smiling Watts on Instagram.
The Beatles rocker Paul McCartney issued a lengthy statement in a moving video.
Elton John wrote: “A very sad day. Charlie Watts was the ultimate drummer. The most stylish of men, and such brilliant company. My deepest condolences to Shirley, Seraphina and Charlotte. And of course, The Rolling Stones.”
“Charlie Watts was the most elegant and dignified drummer in rock and roll. He played exactly what was needed — no more — no less. He is one of a kind,” Joan Jett tweeted.
“#God bless Charlie Watts we’re going to miss you man peace and love to the family Ringo,” tweeted Ringo Starr.
“I’m just shocked to hear about Charlie Watts. I don’t know what to say, I feel terrible for Charlie’s family. Charlie was a great drummer and I loved the Stones music, they made great records. Love & Mercy,” added Brian Wilson.
“One of the best things about Charlie Watts? He met his future wife Shirley before the Rolling Stones even formed. They got married in 1964. 57 years,” said Eric Alper. Nancy Sinatra added, “Charlie Watts, the Rolling Stones Drummer and Inimitable Backbone, Dead at 80.”
Tony Parsons tweeted, “Sleep well, Charlie Watts. A great life doing something you loved and giving joy to generations.”
