Woman, 35, critically injured in hit-and-run crash in Queens
A 35-year-old woman was struck by a car while lying in the middle of the street known as the “Boulevard of Death” in Queens early Saturday morning — and is now fighting for her life, police said.
The woman, who is believed to be homeless, was mowed down around 5:50 a.m. by a silver or gray SUV at Queens Boulevard and Hillside Avenue in Jamaica, police said. The driver fled the scene.
Surveillance video reviewed by The Post showed the victim, who was wearing shorts and a T-shirt, standing on a concrete island in the middle of Queens Boulevard and leaning on a black metal divider. The woman appeared to be unsteady on her feet and stepped off the island into the roadway.
She then lay down in the street — dubbed the “Boulevard of Death” because of the high number of traffic fatalities — and spread out her arms.
Within seconds, the video showed the SUV running over the woman, who rolled with the car’s wheels. The car kept going.
The unidentified woman was taken to Jamaica Hospital in critical condition, according to an NYPD spokesman, who said the victim was apparently homeless.
Devante Samuels, 26, said he knows the woman as “Star” and claimed she had been drinking before she was hit.
He said he witnessed the end of the accident.
“The dude was going fast. He was flying. He didn’t stop,” Samuels said.
The victim was mumbling and going in and out of consciousness, he said.
Samuels said he called 911, but before an ambulance arrived another driver stopped and put the victim in his car to drive her to the hospital.
James Stewart, who said he was the victim’s fiancée, said she was in intensive care “hooked up to a lot of machines.”
“He ran her over like a roach,” he said of the driver. “I think he is a scum bag for running her over. He never stopped. He never slowed down or nothing. He kept on going.”
The NYPD’s Collision Investigation Squad is probing the crash.
