Video captures moment Ida rips roof off Louisiana hospital
Frightening video shows Hurricane Ida’s violent gusts rip a roof off of a local hospital in Louisiana as the potentially deadly Category 4 storm battered the region after making landfall Sunday.
The footage captures the moment part of the roof came off the Lady of the Sea General Hospital in Galliano in the low-lying LaFourche Parish south of New Orleans, according to a tweet by a local NBC-TV reporter.
“Oh my god!” someone can be heard yelling as the roof blows away.
At the time of Sunday’s landfall, Ida had maximum sustained winds of about 150 mph. A storm is considered Category 5, the most powerful, at 157 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center.
The storm has preliminarily tied for the fifth strongest hurricane to come ashore in the country based on wind speed. Based on central pressure, it is also tied for ninth strongest US landfall.
A storm surge of up to 15 feet was forecast in some parts of the region.
