CC Sabathia’s got jokes.
The former Yankees pitcher attended the U.S. Open at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York on Wednesday and couldn’t help but think of the time when tennis star Coco Gauff mistook a fan for him at the same event in 2019.
Sabathia took to Instagram yesterday to share a screen grab of a photo that featured a then-15-year-old Gauff with a fan whom she believed was the MLB legend at the U.S. Open in 2019
The old photo’s caption read, “Thanks for coming to my match @cc_sabathia.”
While Sabathia did attend the tournament in 2019 — where Gauff lost a blockbuster matchup with tennis great Naomi Osaka — the man in the photo was not him.
So, when he attended this year’s Open with his kids, Sabathia decided to share the throwback snap — all in fun, of course.
“On the way at to see @cocogauff again??,” he captioned his post, adding a few crying-laughing emojis.
A number of athletes, including NBA players Rudy Gay (Jazz) and Jeff Green (Nuggets), had a good laugh in the comments.
As for Gauff, she has yet to respond to Sabathia’s post.
The 17-year-old tennis sensation suffered a loss to Sloane Stephens during Wednesday’s match after the 28-year-old recorded a 6-4, 6-2 win.
After defeating Gauff, Stephens will now advance to the third round at the U.S. Open.
