NYC Emergency Management Department cancels event after Ida flooding, damage

The city’s emergency management department nixed its previously scheduled “National Preparedness Month” event Thursday — the morning after a deluge wreaked havoc on New York City.

“Due to the emergency response from remnants of Hurricane Ida, the press conference scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 2 at the Times Square Pedestrian Plaza is canceled,” reads an NYC Emergency Management Department media advisory, sent Thursday morning.

The email came as the majority of transit service remained completely or partly suspended across the MTA’s subways and commuter rails Thursday morning, after on Wednesday night much of New York City became submerged in water due to flash floods that quickly brought about six inches of rain.

At least eight people died in Brooklyn and Queens after people got trapped in their basement apartments when the floodwater surged, law enforcement sources previously said.
