DeSantis dismisses 2024 presidential bid rumors as ‘nonsense’
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is dismissing rumors that he is considering a 2024 presidential bid — calling it “nonsense” and “purely manufactured.”
During a Tuesday news conference in St. Cloud, Florida, the Republican governor denied the rumors, as efforts behind former President Donald Trump’s potential campaign grow.
“All the speculation about me is purely manufactured,” DeSantis said. “I just do my job and we work hard … I hear all this stuff and honestly, it’s nonsense.”
But despite the speculation surrounding DeSantis, Trump has still seemingly come out on top in recent polls.
In July, Trump ran away with a presidential straw poll taken at the Conservative Political Action Conference, easily outdistancing the Sunshine State’s governor, who was runner-up.
Trump received the support of 70 percent of CPAC attendees in the informal presidential nominee poll, while DeSantis came in a distant second place with 21 percent.
A month before, the former president revealed he would consider picking the Florida politician as a running mate.
“Sure I would … I would certainly consider Ron,” Trump told Fox Business‘ Stuart Varney.
DeSantis has long aligned himself with Trump, pushing back against federal COVID-19 regulations, including banning mask mandates in schools and threatening to cut funding from the ones that implement them.
DeSantis’ ban was found unconstitutional, but Florida education officials followed through with the governor’s threat last month.
The governor’s dismissal of a 2024 presidential bid came one day after Trump announced two more campaign-style rallies in the coming weeks — one in Georgia and one in Iowa — furthering speculation that he will run again.
A person close to Trump who was contacted by The Post last week said the former president is more likely than not to throw his hat back into the ring, but added, “I don’t think any announcement is imminent.”
Along with DeSantis, other potential 2024 candidates, including former Vice President Mike Pence, are expected to speak at a Nebraska event celebrating agriculture on Sept. 12.
