Northeast braces for flash flood, tornado warnings as Hurricane Larry brings dangerous swells

A Category 3 hurricane moving through the Atlantic is bringing new severe weather threats to the East Coast — just one week after the remnants of Hurricane Ida ravaged the region.

Hurricane Larry, which is churning near Bermuda, is not expected to make landfall in the US, but forecasters say it will be powerful enough to be felt along the East Coast.

Forecasters are predicting that significant swell from Larry should hit the US and continue through the end of the week, causing dangerous rips and surf along the coast.

Separately, the National Weather Service has warned of severe thunderstorms and flash flooding across the Northeast beginning late Wednesday.

“Damaging winds, hail and a few tornadoes are possible, along with heavy downpours. Very wet soil from recent heavy rains from Henri and Ida’s remnants increases the flash flood threat,” the service tweeted.

The tornadoes are forecast for parts of Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The two states were struck by seven tornadoes during last week’s historic storm.

Forecasters are also predicting that significant swell from Larry should hit the US and continue through the end of the week.

Meanwhile, Larry, which had sustained winds of 115 mph, churned 660 miles southeast of Bermuda early Wednesday.

The center of the hurricane is expected to pass east of Bermuda, the National Hurricane Center warned.

Forecasters have issued a tropical storm warning for the island.

At least 52 people died across five states after Hurricane Ida tore through the Northeast last week.

President Biden on Tuesday traveled to New York and New Jersey to tour areas struck by the deadly flooding.
