A New York City Uber driver has died just three days after he was struck in the head by a stray bullet allegedly fired by a 15-year-old during a Harlem shootout.
Kuldip Singh, 21, died Tuesday at Mount Sinai Morningside hospital, police confirmed Wednesday.
Singh was in his vehicle on Saturday night when he was caught in the crossfire on the corner of 131st Street and Frederick Douglass Boulevard in Harlem around 9:45 p.m.
Police believe a 15-year-old boy fired the shot that struck Singh.
The teenager, whose name has not been released, was hit in the abdomen and the left thigh in the exchange of gunfire, police sources said.
The teen had gotten into a dispute with a passenger in the back seat of Singh’s car and opened the rear door of the vehicle, sources said Wednesday.
When he did, the unknown passenger, who is still being sought by police, opened fire and struck the teenager, who returned fire and inadvertently hit Singh in the head, the sources said.
The wounded teen allegedly had drugs on him when he was taken into custody, but no charges have yet been filed in the case.
He is being held at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, where he is in stable condition, the sources said.
Police initially said that Singh had a mother and her child in the car at the time of the shooting.
A spokeswoman for Uber said Wednesday that the ride-sharing company had reached out to both Singh’s family and the passengers.
“Our hearts are with Mr. Singh, his passenger and their loved ones after this horrific and senseless act of violence,” the company said in a statement.
