Daunte Wright reportedly shot video of himself with gun in bathroom
Daunte Wright, the 20-year-old who was fatally shot in April by a Minnesota cop, recorded a video of himself pointing a gun at his head in a woman’s bathroom before he allegedly robbed her in December 2019, according to a report.
The short video, obtained by Fox News, shows Wright playing with the firearm with the sound of water running in the background.
He later allegedly aimed the pistol at the woman, reached into her clothes, choked her and threatened to shoot her if she didn’t hand over the $820 he knew she had stuffed into her bra, according to the network.
Wright, who was charged along with an 18-year-old friend with aggravated robbery, was later accused of violating the terms of his release in the case — leading to the outstanding arrest warrant that police cited when they tried to arrest him April 11, 2021, Fox News said.
Brooklyn Center Police Officer Kimberly Potter said she thought she had grabbed her Taser instead of her service weapon during the fateful traffic stop in the Minneapolis suburb, where Wright tried to drive away.
Potter submitted her resignation but was instead fired and later charged with second-degree manslaughter in Wright’s death.
Last week, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison added a first-degree manslaughter charge against Potter, the Pine Journal reported.
Police recovered the 13-second clip of Wright fooling around with the gun from his phone, Fox News reported, citing court documents.
The news outlet also obtained a supplemental police report that identified Wright as a “documented LOUD PACK gang member.” The term is slang for a strong-smelling bag of marijuana.
Wright’s alleged accomplice, Emajay Driver, who had attended high school with the robbery victim, was invited to the apartment the woman shared with a roommate about 10 p.m. and brought him along, the police report said, according to Fox News.
After the group smoked marijuana and listened to music, the women asked Wright and Driver to leave bout 2:30 a.m., but the victim let them sleep on her floor when they said they couldn’t find a ride, the outlet said.
The following morning, the men saw the victim tuck the roommate’s rent cash into her bra. Wright allegedly told Driver that they should “hit some stains,” slang for robbing people, the police report said.
The two men were arrested five days after Wright’s robbery attempt, according to Fox News.
Wright reportedly violated the terms of his release by allegedly waving a gun in public in Minneapolis.
Driver was convicted in the robbery case in December 2020, according to court documents cited by Fox News.
Last week, the Minnesota AG said in a new criminal complaint that Potter “committed first-degree manslaughter by recklessly handling a firearm when she fatally shot” Wright, the Pine Journal reported.
If convicted of first-degree manslaughter, she could face between 74 and 103 months behind bars, or between roughly six and eight-and-a-half years, according to Minnesota’s sentencing guidelines, the outlet reported.
A second-degree manslaughter conviction would result in a sentence between 41 and 57 months, or about three to almost five years.
