AOC and de Blasio crash the Met Gala to stick it to the rich. Joke’s on them
Just in case you needed a reminder that our mayor is a nitwit, Bill de Blasio showed up to the Met Gala Monday night.
Yep, the same mayor who not only never went to the Met Gala before, he insulted it.
“It’s an elite gathering, I’m not an elite guy,” he said in 2019. “It really — let’s make it real simple, it’s just not my thing. This is the kind of place where the elite goes and likes to be with each other, and I have a different approach.”
But this year it’s different. Because it’s his last months in office and he can’t be tagged as a hypocrite? Or maybe because he realizes he needs to raise his profile — and fundraising — if he runs for governor?
Perish the thought! His spokesman says it’s because “he wanted to highlight a local designer who had been able to make it through the pandemic. It’s a notable way to grab people’s attention and highlight the return of the city’s fashion industry jobs.”
Funny, but the Met Gala always highlighted the fashion industry and its importance to New York City.
De Blasio, a Red Sox fan, wouldn’t know that because he never appreciated the tapestry that is Gotham. He never ate in our restaurants, never went to the shows. Never realized you can have an opera at Lincoln Center with an audience in suits and dresses, or enjoy a street musician on the subway. This city runs on Wall Street traders and hot dog vendors. It’s not us vs. them.
Which brings us the Gala’s other gatecrasher, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. At least she had a sense of humor about it, wearing a gown with “Tax the Rich” printed on it.
Very droll … until you remember that AOC helped sink Amazon’s new headquarters in Queens that would have brought 25,000 jobs. Long Island City residents would likely trade AOC’s stunt for the economic boom it would have meant for their neighborhood.
You have to wonder what Anna Wintour was thinking, inviting two politicians who have such little regard for her world except as a cash register. Then again, the joke’s really on Bill and AOC.
