Jets report card: A bad look for Robert Saleh

Grading the Jets following their 26-0 loss to the Broncos on Sunday.

Offense

This one was a dud from everyone. Offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur seemed to have no game plan and his play-calling was brutal at times. QB Zach Wilson (19 of 35, 160 yards, 2 interceptions, 5 sacks, 42.6 rating) held onto the ball too long. Part of Wilson’s problem is the Jets wide receivers can’t get open. The offensive line was asked to block too long. All of it added up to 162 total yards, a whopping 3.1 yards per play.

Grade: F

Defense

The offense bears more blame for this loss than the defense, but the Jets did give up 344 yards and had some really bad plays. They gave up three passes of 25 yards or more, the explosive plays that Saleh preaches against. LB C.J. Mosley missed a tackle at the goal line. CB Brandin Echols had a killer pass interference penalty that led to a touchdown. Broncos QB Teddy Bridgewater (19 of 25, 235 yards, 104.6 rating) looked comfortable for most of the day. The defense did manage to hold Denver to field goals instead of touchdowns four times or this could have been even uglier.

Special Teams

The Jets took a delay of game penalty that wiped out what would have been a 56-yard field goal from Matt Ammendola in the second quarter. It was an inexcusable mistake. They added another penalty on special teams when Ryan Griffin was called for a block in the back on a return. Special teams had little to no positive impact for the Jets.

Grade: D

Coaching

LaFleur is learning what life is like as the offensive coordinator of the Jets. He had no answers on Sunday and looks overmatched. Some of his play calls in short yardage are head scratching. The Jets have scored three first-half points this season. That is a bad look for Saleh. The Jets look unprepared at the start of games.
