Nestlé recalls 14 tons of DiGiorno pizzas over allergen complaint

The frozen pizza brand famed for the “It’s not delivery — it’s DiGiorno” slogan is now the subject of a massive nationwide recall.

Nestlé issued the alert for nearly 14 tons of frozen DiGiorno Crispy Pan Crust pepperoni pizza following reports that it contained undeclared soy protein, a known allergen.

“FSIS is concerned that some product may be in consumers’ freezers,” US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced Sunday. “Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them.”

The mislabelling mishap first came to light after a customer informed the Swiss snack giant that boxes labelled pepperoni pizza actually contained three meat pizza, which harbors allergenic textured soy protein. These mislabelled products were reportedly shipped to retail locations and distribution centers nationwide.

FSIS reports that the pizza products in question were produced on June 30, 2021 with an expiration date of March of 2022. They are denoted by the USDA mark of inspections sticker, which bears establishment number “EST. 1682A,” the code for Nation Pizza Products Limited — a subsidiary of Nestle USA.

Upon finding one of the improperly labelled pies, customers are urged to either throw the item away or return it to the place of purchase.

Thankfully, the watchdog hasn’t confirmed any reports of allergic reactions following consumption of any tainted pizza.

Questions concerning the dough-tal recall should be directed to Bonita Cleveland, Consumer Services Manager at Nestlé USA, at 800-681-1676 or [email protected].
