A pair of NYPD cops were maimed early Monday — including one whose hand was almost completely blown off — as they allegedly set off fireworks in a Citi Field parking lot while on duty, The Post has learned.
One of the officers is believed to have brought the pyrotechnics to his shift and was playing with them just before 3:45 a.m., when the blast left him and the other male officer with serious injuries, sources said.
One cop lost a finger, while the other suffered severe injuries to their right hand and right eye, sources said, adding that the second officer may lose their eye.
The cops, whose names weren’t immediately made public, were on overnight detail at a parking lot on Northern Boulevard near the World’s Fair Marina, where the NYPD parks police cruisers for patrols at the Mets’ stadium, according to police sources.
The injured officers were separately taken to Elmhurst Hospital and Bellevue Hospital, cops said.
Two other cops who were working the same detail, but weren’t playing with the pyrotechnics, were grilled Monday by Internal Affairs Bureau about terrifying incident, sources said. They were treated for tinnitus, police said.
Another police source slammed the on-duty activities as “unreal.”
“These guys are crazy,” the source said.
A police spokesman did not respond to questions about the incident or any of the officers’ statuses, only saying it “is currently under investigation.”
A spokesperson previously told The Post the explosion happened at Fresh Meadows Park.
