The Brewers will likely have to go through their entire MLB postseason run without one of their top relievers as right-hander Devin Williams fractured his right hand punching a wall on Sunday following a night of drinking, after the team celebrated clinching the NL Central.
Williams will likely require surgery, Brewers president of baseball operations David Stearns told reporters on Wednesday. There’s an “outside chance” Williams, the 27-year-old who won NL Rookie of the Year in 2020, could return if Milwaukee reaches the World Series. Williams was not involved in an altercation, according to Stearns.
“After our celebration I went out to have a few drinks and on my way home I was a little frustrated, upset and had punched a wall,” Williams told reporters.
In 58 appearances this season, Williams is 8-2 with a 2.50 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 87 strikeouts in 54 innings. He had a miniscule 0.33 ERA in 22 appearances last season.
“I’m pretty upset with myself,” Williams said. “There’s no one to blame but me. I feel like I let our team down.”
The Brewers (94-63) will be the No. 2 seed in the National League and will face the winner of the NL East, most likely the Braves, in the Divisional Round.
