A detective who went to bat for alleged racist cops and their “frat house” culture inside a troubled Brooklyn command — is accused of driving off after drunkenly crashing his car on Long Island, The Post has learned.
Det. William Greer, 55, was arrested by New York State Police in Hempstead on Sept. 16 on charges of driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident, according to cops and court records.
Greer allegedly collided with another car while heading eastbound on the Southern State Parkway near exit 13 around 9:45 p.m. but kept driving, a State Police spokesman said.
Troopers later caught up with Greer three miles away at the intersection of Hempstead Avenue and Morris Street in Malvern where local cops had stopped this car, police said.
Greer refused a Breathalyzer and was arrested, cops said. He was given summonses and is due in court on April 6, 2022, for arraignment, court records show.
No one was injured in the crash, State Police said.
He has been suspended without pay, according to the NYPD.
His attorney declined to comment and Greer could not be reached.
“Det. Greer served the city and the borough of Brooklyn very well for many, many years and not only the city but his fellow detectives as a union representative,” Detective Endowment Association President Paul DeGiacomo said. “And let’s remember, he’s innocent until proven guilty,”
Greer, a union delegate in the 66th Precinct, defended the character of cops in a Brooklyn precinct that was rocked by a civil rights filing that described the command as a racist “frat house.”
The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission Title VII complaint was filed by Michael Moy, a Chinese American cop with 26 years on the job, who alleged retaliation and racist slurs from the detective squad.
Greer towed the company line to defend the cops during the trial, Moy’s attorney, Fred Lichtmacher, told The Post Wednesday.
“They [Greer and others] were brought in to say they [the accused cops] were wonderful workers and my clients were horrible workers, which is ridiculous,” Lichtmacher said.
Greer also allegedly contributed to the toxic culture and this, Lichtmacher said, was the latest example.
“These are bad cops period. This club has to be broken up.”
After the allegations were revealed in 2019, the NYPD transferred out multiple officers.
