TikTok is known for being a great place to find new recipes, clever food hacks and wacky but interesting trends.
The latest foodie trend that’s taking over the social media platform is a recipe of leftovers created by user Emily Mariko. Her account has garnered over 38 million likes and 2.2 million followers thanks to easy-to-make leftovers dishes.
The 29-year-old is known for starting the “leftover lunch” trend. Her most viral clip on TikTok shows her whipping up an Asian fusion-inspired plate of shredded leftover cooked salmon and white rice topped with mayo, soy sauce and spicy Sriracha.
Perhaps the most interesting step to her recipe is when the influencer heats up the rice and salmon concoction in the microwave. She placed an ice cube on top of the rice and wrapped a sheet of parchment paper over the plate.
After the plate is steamed and heated from the microwave, she mixes it together and adds her sauces. For one final touch, Mariko tops her dish with dried seaweed.
Her videos have popped up on many users’ “For You Page,” thus compelling others to try their hand at making the recipe.
Commenters are loving Mariko’s videos and have filled her comments sections with their thoughts. Some have also questioned the dish itself and state the plate is just too simple.
One person asked, “Why are people so shook by fish and rice?” Others commented on the simplicity and the easiness of the recipe.
“The amount of seaweed snacks, salmon and rice I have eaten in the last couple weeks because of this girl …” one TikTok user wrote. “I’ve made this 3x this week now it’s so good,” another added.
“HOW DID THE ICE CUBE SURVIVE THE MICROWAVE?” one user wondered.
