Tim Tebow shares emotional Urban Meyer talk: ‘Heartbreaking situation’

Tim Tebow is really upset over Urban Meyer‘s video controversy.

The former NFLer — who quarterbacked Meyer’s Florida teams to two national championships — became emotional explaining the conversation he had with Meyer and his wife Shelley about the infamous video of the coach being danced upon by a young woman.

“This is a very disappointing, frustrating and honestly heartbreaking situation,” Tebow, one of the final cuts at Meyer’s Jaguars camp this summer as a tight end, said on “First Take” Friday morning.

“When I first saw and heard what was happening, my heart was hurting for Miss Shelley… Coach shared with me that it was one of the hardest times of his life. And he apologized, but he didn’t need to apologize to me.

“I know this weighs so heavy on his heart and he is hurting. I do think for some of the guys he will have to earn back their trust and respect. I think he really wants to do that.”

Tebow went on to say that Meyer and his family aren’t taking the situation lightly.

“This is a very serious situation, a very disappointing situation, but I also know that Coach isn’t taking it lightly and he knows what a big deal this is, how disappointing it is to so many people, and I believe that he wants to make amends, which is very hard and it takes a while,” Tebow said.

Tebow’s advice to Meyer was “to apologize, to admit it, to learn from it, and to never, never repeat it.”

Meyer came under fire on Sunday when a viral video showed the first-year Jaguars coach at his Urban Chophouse restaurant with a 24-year-old blonde woman dancing on his lap. The outing occurred last Friday, one day after the Jaguars went 0-4 with a loss to the Bengals.

“He was in the wrong place and he was in the wrong state of mind and he had too much to drink and that led to bad decisions and I think that’s something we can all learn from, right?” Tebow questioned.

“We need people there to hold us accountable. To not let us get in tricky positions. To not be in places where temptation can creep in and we’re in the wrong state of mind. One of the important things here that we’ve talked about and that I know he knows is to don’t put yourself in that situation.”

Meyer apologized publicly in a press conference on Monday, and said he apologized to the team as a group and in one-on-one meetings.

The former Ohio State coach has not been reprimanded by the team or NFL — though Jaguars owner, Shad Khan said in a statement that Meyer must earn back “the team’s trust and respect.”
