Jets report card: Real concerns about this coaching staff
Grading the Jets’ 54-13 loss to the Patriots on Sunday.
Offense
The Jets looked lost at the start of the game … again. They spent two weeks talking about starting fast and they had a three-and-out with uninspiring play-calling. The best offensive play at the moment is throw the ball deep and hope for a pass interference penalty. They only had 62 rushing yards and no real long runs. QB Zach Wilson (6 of 10, 51 yards) had one really nice throw before exiting with a knee injury. His backup Mike White (20 of 32, 202 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT) had some good moments and the expected bad ones.
Grade: F
Defense
What the hell happened to this defense? C.J. Mosley should ask for a raise. The Jets looked lost without him. The Patriots rolled up 551 yards in addition to the 54 points they scored. Josh McDaniels owned Robert Saleh and Jeff Ulbrich in this one. The Jets still have no interceptions this season. QB Mac Jones (24 of 36, 307 yards, 2 TDs) did his best Tom Brady impersonation. RB Damien Harris (14 rushes, 106 yards, 2 TDs) was unstoppable. The Jets had no answers for Brandon Bolden (6 catches, 79 yards, 1 TD) out of the backfield. It was a disgusting effort from this group.
Grade: F
Special teams
Kicker Matt Ammendola missed a 48-yard field goal in the first quarter after the offense actually moved the ball for once. Other than that, the special teams did not do anything particularly bad or particularly good. They probably don’t deserve an F, but everyone gets one after that performance.
Grade: F
Coaching
Saleh and his staff had two weeks to prepare. Think about that. Two weeks to figure out how to best play the Patriots and they lost 54-13. There is no excuse for that. Offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur looks like he’s in over his head. He shows no imagination and has failed to get this offense going all year. There have to be real concerns about this coaching staff after this effort.
