Corey Davis: Jets’ culture starting to change for the better

Coming off the Jets’ worst loss in more than a decade and staring at a 1-5 record, it does not feel like things are changing much yet around the team under first-year coach Robert Saleh.

But wide receiver Corey Davis, who played for a contender in Tennessee, said he knows the culture is changing around the Jets.

“It’s not going to flip overnight. It’s going to be a process,” said Davis, who is in his first year with the Jets. “Saleh’s always saying this is part of the foundation being laid. It’s going to be an uphill battle. It’s going to get ugly at times, but we have the right people to flip this thing. I truly believe that.”

The 54-13 loss to the Patriots was the Jets’ worst margin in a loss since 2010, and the 54 points allowed were the most the franchise has allowed since 1979. The Jets now must turn the page and get ready for a red-hot Bengals team Sunday at MetLife Stadium.

The NFL trading deadline is Tuesday, and the Jets could be sellers. That would mean moving on from some veteran players with expiring contracts such as WR Jamison Crowder and S Marcus Maye.

It is always a balance between the short-term goals of a coaching staff, which may not want to sacrifice wins in 2021, and the long-term vision of a front office. But Saleh said he and GM Joe Douglas are in agreement with how they should handle things.

“I’m in complete lockstep with Joe with regards to making every decision that we need to make that’s in the best interest of this organization and the future of it and the direction we’re trying to go,” Saleh said. “So, if it’s something that will help us, great. If it’s not, great. Forcing things is not Joe’s forte, he is very deliberate, he communicates with us all the time.

“So, I love the way he goes about his business and I love his process. But I’m with Joe. If it’s something that’s going to help us, awesome. But I also know we’re not looking for a fire sale either.”

The Jets designated LB Jarrad Davis, DL Kyle Phillips and P Braden Mann to return to practice from injured reserve. It sounds like Davis, who has been out since training camp, may have a chance of playing.

LB C.J. Mosley (hamstring) practiced on a limited basis Wednesday. Saleh sounded optimistic Mosley would play Sunday. RB Tevin Coleman (hamstring), DE Bryce Huff (back), TE Trevon Wesco (knee), LB Quincy Williams (concussion), QB Zach Wilson (knee) and QB Joe Flacco (personal reasons) did not practice. S Ashtyn Davis (shoulder), TE Tyler Kroft (back) and DE Shaq Lawson (wrist) were limited.
