Luis Rojas may not have to leave New York for his next job in baseball. It might just be with the other team in town.
The former Mets manager interviewed for a job as a base coach with the Yankees, The Athletic reported Sunday night. Rojas, 40, did not have his contract picked up after going 103-119 in two playoff-less seasons in Flushing. The Mets have offered him an unspecified job in the organization.
The Yankees gave manager Aaron Boone a three-year contract extension, but gutted his coaching staff after the Bombers lost the AL wild-card game to the Red Sox. Hitting coach Marcus Thames, assistant hitting coach P.J. Pillitere and third-base coach Phil Nevin were all let go. And first-base coach Reggie Willits left to take a volunteer assistant position at the University of Oklahoma.
While Rojas, the son of former longtime MLB manager and player Felipe Alou, may not have succeeded as a big league manager, he is well respected for his work in the Mets’ minor league system.
MLB’s GM meetings are set to kick off Monday in Carlsbad, Calif.
