‘QAnon Shaman’ gets more than three years in jail for role in Capitol riot
The so-called “QAnon Shaman,” known for storming the US Capitol in a coyote-fur headdress and American-flag face paint, was sentenced to 41 months in federal prison Wednesday for his role in the Jan. 6 attack, according to a report.
Jacob Chansley, 34, of Phoenix — who had pleaded guilty to one count of obstruction — was given the sentence by District of Columbia Judge Royce Lamberth, according to CBS News. He will also be placed on probation for three years after his release.
Chansley, a former actor and a Navy veteran, became a poster boy for the riot after wild photos of him shirtless, clutching a spear and sitting in the Senate president’s chair were widely circulated.
Three days after the building breach, he was hit with charges including civil disorder, violent entry and disorderly conduct — and had previously faced up to 28 years behind bars.
After he copped to one obstruction charge in September, prosecutors asked that he be locked up for 51 months, the longest-requested sentence linked to the riot to date.
Chansley was among the first of the pro-President Donald Trump mob to storm the Capitol to stop the certification of Joe Biden’s Electoral College victory — leaving a note on the desk of former Vice President Mike Pence saying, “It’s only a matter of time, justice is coming,” according to prosecutors.
His lawyer, Al Watkins, has said Chansley suffered from “genuine mental health issues” at the time of the conspiracy theory-fueled attack, and he was ordered to undergo a psychological evaluation in May.
Chansley has been jailed in Washington, DC, and Virginia since his arrest, and has already served 10 months of his 41-month sentence.
He has since said he no longer supports Trump.
