LA man charged with murder in Jacqueline Avant killing

A Los Angeles man suspected in last week’s slaying of Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Clarence Avant’s wife, Jacqueline, has been formally charged with murder.

Aariel Maynor, 29, fatally shot the 81-year old philanthropist at about 2:30 a.m. on Dec. 1 when he broke into the Avants’ Beverly Hills home, authorities allege.

Maynor is also facing an attempted murder charge for allegedly trying to shoot at the Avants’ security guard, who was not injured, as well as two counts of residential burglary with a person present.

Maynor is scheduled to appear in court for his arraignment on Tuesday.

Maynor was arrested just hours after he allegedly killed Jacqueline Avant because he shot himself in the foot during a botched robbery attempt at a second home in Beverly Hills.  During a press conference last week, Beverly Hills Police Chief Mark Stainbrook said Maynor was out on parole and had an extensive rap sheet.

Court records reviewed by the Post showed Maynor pleaded guilty in November 2013 to a robbery charge and was sentenced to five years in prison. He also pleaded no contest to a domestic violence incident in July 2013 and was convicted of felony grand theft in June 2010.

“Mrs. Avant was a treasured member of our community. Her generosity and good will touched so many lives,” District Attorney George Gascón said in a release. “My office is working closely with the Los Angeles and Beverly Hills police departments in the investigation and prosecution of this case. We must continue to work together to hold accountable the people who commit violent crimes against our community.”
