Joe Buck brought jokes.
On Monday night’s “Manningcast” of the Patriots’ 14-10 victory over the Bills, Peyton Manning was questioning Buck, a guest on the show, about his own broadcasting experience.
“When y’all have a blowout game, do you ever wish you could have a guest on there that you and Troy [Aikman] can interview?” Manning asked.
“Yeah, you know, the last time I thought about that was when you guys played Seattle in the Super Bowl,” Buck deadpanned.
Buck came up with the crack so quickly that it took Peyton a moment to realize he’d been zinged.
“Shots fired!” his brother Eli said. “You just went up a notch in my book, Joe.”
Peyton quipped that Buck was “trying to get on Eli’s good list, trying to get my mom to send you a Christmas card after all the abuse you’ve given Eli.”
Buck was referencing Super Bowl 48 in early 2014. On the first down from scrimmage, Broncos center Manny Ramirez snapped the ball so high over Peyton Manning’s head that the play resulted in a safety. It would be an omen for the game, a wire-to-wire 43-8 butt-whipping by the Seahawks.
As always, the “Manningcast” produced a bounty of interesting content Monday night, including Buck’s defense of his oft-criticized David Tyree “helmet catch” call from Super Bowl 42, and Peyton Manning explaining how he was blocked by Patriots PR from interviewing Mac Jones before the game – as had been his custom with all other quarterbacks on these games.
