Florida condo collapse victims to get $4.9M from fundraising efforts

A Florida nonprofit is set to distribute nearly $5 million to survivors and the families of those killed in the collapse of a beachfront Florida condo building this past summer.

Support Surfside was created in the wake of the June 14 collapse of Champlain Towers South outside Miami that left 98 people dead. The organization said Tuesday it would split the money it collected among 213 survivors and the relatives of those killed, WPLG-TV reported.

According to the group, the funds were raised by various groups throughout South Florida and from individual donors, with the nonprofit’s committee voting to disperse the funds.

“Together we raised nearly $5 million and the entire balance of what was raised will be disseminated in full,” the group wrote online.

“None of the foundations involved assessed any fees for this effort, and all of the time dedicated by our teams was donated in full.”

The horrified nation watched as crews of rescue workers sifted through the rubble for weeks in a desperate search for survivors — although none were found.

The 12-story tower was in the midst of undergoing a mandatory improvements upgrade when the collapse occurred. It had been flagged with “major structural damage” in a 2018 engineering report.

In addition to the funds raised through Support Surfside, dozens of lawsuits seeking millions of dollars in damages are working their way through Florida courts.
