Biden plans to nominate Kennedy, the only surviving child of former President John Kennedy, as an ambassador to Australia. Caroline Kennedy, 64, served as ambassador to Japan under former President Barack Obama and once vied to replace Hillary Clinton as the junior US senator from New York.

Kwan, 41, was set to be tapped as an ambassador to Belize, the Biden administration said. The former world champion has served as an adviser at the US Department of State and on the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition.

The nominations, when announced, would require approval from the Senate.

Veteran diplomat Robert Wood was also poised to be nominated to represent the US in the United Nations, and former National Reconnaissance Office official Frank Calvelli was in line to be the first procurement executive in charge of military space programs.
