A Kentucky business owner whose building was demolished by a tornado was reunited last weekend with his office cat – who survived in the rubble for nine days.
Sonny “Hoot” Gibson had given up hope that his feline friend Madix survived the Dec. 10 storm in Mayfield – but then he heard a faint meow as he stood near the remnants of his building on Sunday.
“I thought I heard a meow, and I thought my mind’s playing tricks on me so I hollered his name out, and he meowed again,” Gibson told the Associated Press.
Gibson was unable to locate the black cat himself, so he sought help from some of his employees.
Soon after, they located the cat, alive, in a hole beneath the ruins.
“It was just an incredible feeling to put him in my arms,” Gibson said. “If cats actually have nine lives, he probably used up about eight of them in that nine-day period.”
“I don’t know how anything could’ve survived not just the tornado but the destruction that came along with it,” he said.
Mayfield was hit hard by the early December tornado that was part of an outbreak that leveled countless buildings and left 76 people dead in Kentucky.
