Manchin calls for ‘greater understanding’ as Dems fume over BBB opposition

Sen. Joe Manchin told his constituents Thursday to “pray for peace, safety and a greater understanding of one another that brings our nation together” this Christmas amid Democratic uproar over his opposition to President Biden’s $2 trillion Build Back Better social spending package.

In a video posted on his Twitter account, Manchin (D-WV) said that despite several challenges facing Americans this year — including the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic — “we have so much to be grateful for.”

“Thanks to the resilience and innovation of the American people, our country has led the world in the creation of multiple safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines, allowing West Virginia families to safely gather together this holiday season,” Manchin said as an instrumental version of “Silent Night” played in the background.

“I encourage any and every West Virginian who has not received the COVID-19 vaccine and booster shot to protect themselves, their loved ones and their community by getting vaccinated,” he added.  

Manchin drew the wrath of progressives after he announced on “Fox News Sunday” that he was a “no” vote on the spending plan following months of negotiations with the White House, citing the $29 trillion national debt, inflation and the coronavirus pandemic.

The fate of Build Back Better rests on Manchin’s vote in the 50-50 Senate, because no Republicans are expected to support it.

In his message, Manchin lauded West Virginia residents as part of a “truly resilient, statewide community who looks out for each other during good times and bad.”

“My parents taught me that if you can count your blessings, you can share your blessings,” said Manchin, a former West Virginia governor. “Gayle and I encourage all West Virginians to join us and pray for the safety of our fellow West Virginians — frontline workers, health care professionals, service members and veterans and thanking them for their service for our nation.”
