Historically black universities hit with bomb threats

Six historically black universities across the US were hit with bomb threats on Monday, forcing many of them to lock down campuses and order students to shelter in their dormitories.

The FBI said it was aware of the threats made at the schools in Georgia, Louisiana, Maryland, Florida, Delaware and Washington, DC.

“The FBI takes all potential threats seriously,” an FBI spokesperson said, adding the agency was working with local law enforcement to “determine their credibility.”

It is the second time this month that multiple historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have been targeted by a series of bomb threats.

In warnings to students and faculty on Monday, Georgia’s Albany State University said the threat against its campus had been directed at academic buildings.

The university shut down its campus and postponed all classes as police continued to scour the buildings.

School officials at Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, locked down its campus and told students to stay in their dorms until the all-clear was given.

Everyone on Maryland’s Bowie State University campus was told to shelter in place until more information became available. Classes were moved online as law enforcement investigated.

Explosive detection dogs and bomb technicians were spotted helping campus police sweep buildings on the campus, WTOP-TV reported.

Howard University in DC was also the subject of a bomb threat in the early hours of Monday — but students and faculty were later given the all-clear.

Classes were canceled at the Bethune-Cookman University campus in Daytona Beach, Florida — even after cops cleared the area of any bomb threats. Police said they would maintain a presence on campus for the rest of the day.

And Delaware State University said the threat to itscampus was made early Monday.

“We are deeply disturbed by a second round of bomb threats at HBCU campuses within a month,” US Reps. Alma Adams (D-NC) and French Hill (R-Ark.), who are co-chairs of the Congressional Bipartisan HBCU Caucus, said in a statement Monday.

“Learning is one of the most noble and most human pursuits, and schools are sacred places that should always be free from terror. Solving these crimes and bringing those responsible to justice should be a top priority for federal law enforcement.”

The previous threats were made against HBCUs on Jan. 5 — but authorities later cleared them and said no bombs were found.
