Mina Kimes got the last laugh in her war of words with Jeff Garcia after the 49ers’ 20-17 upset by the Rams in Sunday’s NFC Championship game.
After 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo threw an interception with less than two minutes left in the game, Kimes shared a funny meme, seemingly trolling Garcia, a former NFL quarterback, who took a shot at her last week over her critique of Garoppolo.
Fans had a field day in the comments, with one person pointing out that Garcia changed his once public Instagram account to private.
“Jeff Garcia knew that head was commin…,” a Twitter user replied to Kimes’ meme that showed a man cringing with a red solo cup.
Garcia went on a rant about Kimes in a since-deleted Instagram post, calling her a “joke” for her analysis about Garoppolo.
He said Kimes has “never ever taken a snap or can truly understand the ability, the mindset, the physical and mental toughness that it takes to play the QB position or any position in the NFL.”
Last Tuesday, Kimes appeared on ESPN’s “First Take,” and argued that Garoppolo wasn’t helping the 49ers win.
“Since joining the Niners, he has two touchdowns and five interceptions in the postseason,” she said. “These are not advanced statistics. The dude is just simply not helping them win.”
Kimes later hit back at Garcia on Twitter, writing, “Apparently I was the only person last week to point out Jimmy Garoppolo didn’t play well.”
Garcia then called into 95.7 The Game’s “Steiny & Guru” in San Francisco to explain himself and said his comments about Kimes were “nothing sexist,” and that he doesn’t “owe anybody an apology for my beliefs and my experience at playing the quarterback position.”
On Monday’s episode of ESPN’s “First Take,” host Stephen A. Smith took a shot at Garcia while recapping the Rams-49ers game.
“We don’t hear anything from you today,” he said about Garcia, who played quarterback for San Francisco from 1999 to 2003. “You should be apologizing on national television to Mina Kimes with your trifling self.”
Smith’s co-host, Molly Qerim defended Kimes on the show last week.
All eyes are now on Garoppolo, who possibly played his final game for San Francisco before a possible trade or release this offseason.
