This is how often you should replace everything in your bedroom

Everyone is probably guilty of holding on to things a little too long.

However, they’re especially holding on to things in the bedroom for far too long.

Spring cleaning is on the horizon for many, so why not take the opportunity to go through those long-held items in your bedroom and see what needs replacing.

Mattress

People spend a good majority of their lives sleeping, so it’s a good idea to make sure your mattress is up to par for the task.

If your mattress is older than 10 years, it’s probably time for a replacement, according to Consumer Reports.

Additionally, you may need to replace your mattress if you wake up tired, you sleep better away from your bed, or your mattress is starting to sag.

However, if you’re over 40, then you may need a replacement sooner since your body tolerates less pressure as it ages, wrote Consumer Reports.

According to the mattress-reviewer site, Sleep Like the Dead, your mattress’ makeup could have an effect on its longevity as well.

A latex mattress could last up to eight years, memory foam around seven, and innerspring around six.

Pillows

Pillows can hold sweat, oil, dead skin, and hair, so you’ll want to replace those accordingly.

Per The National Sleep Foundation, pillows should be replaced every one to two years.

Similar to mattresses, though, pillows can have a differing lifespan depending on their material.

The most common pillows, down-alternative or polyester, typically last one to two years, polyfoam and memory foam two to three years, latex two to four years, and down or feather pillows one to three years.

Sheets

With regular use and washing, your bed sheets will start to wear down, so people typically replace them around the two-year mark, Brooklinen co-founder Vicki Fulop said to NBC News.

Fulop added: “Having said that, it doesn’t mean your sheets will all of a sudden fall apart after two years.

“Just that if they’re starting to look and feel worn out, and you want the optimal condition and comfort for your bed, two years or so is a great time for a refresh.”

Comfortors and duvets

Thankfully, comforters and duvets last much longer than anything else on our bed.

Your comforters and duvets can last up anywhere from 15 to 25 years if they stay covered and are aired out regularly, according to lifestyle expert Martha Stewart.

But if your comforter starts to leak filling or looks limp and flat, then it may be time for a refresh.

Humidifiers

Additionally, many people choose to use a humidifier or a dehumidifier for a better sleep environment.

A dehumidifier can last up to six to nine years, but its filters should be checked twice a year as maintenance and replaced if there’s any damage, according to the parts store Repair Clinic.

On the other hand, you should be replacing the filter, pad, or element yearly, per Repair Clinic.

Additionally, a cleaning expert revealed the things in your home you could be damaging by cleaning too much.

In addition to regularly replacing your bedding, you should be cleaning your air filters to avoid breathing in dust.
