Amir Locke’s cousin arrested in connection to homicide Minneapolis cops were investigating
A teenage suspect has been arrested in connection with the homicide that Minneapolis cops were investigating when they shot and killed Amir Locke while executing a no-knock search warrant, police said Tuesday.
Mehki Camden Speed, who is Locke’s 17-year-old cousin, was taken into custody Monday afternoon in Winona, Minnesota, and charged Tuesday with two counts of second-degree murder in the Jan. 10 homicide of Otis Elder, cops said.
Police were investigating Elder’s death Wednesday when they executed a search warrant at a downtown Minneapolis apartment where Locke’s family said the 22-year-old had been staying.
Locke, who was not named in the search warrant, was wrapped in a blanket and holding a pistol when police arrived and opened fire on him, body camera footage shows.
The death has angered activists and Locke’s family, who questioned police’s initial account of the shooting.
It’s not clear if Speed had retained an attorney or if he would be charged as an adult in the homicide. He has been booked into a juvenile detention facility.
