Kelly Stafford is still processing that husband Matthew Stafford, the quarterback of the Rams, will be playing in his first-ever Super Bowl on Sunday.
“I’m so excited we’re here, it doesn’t feel real, it really doesn’t,” Kelly said on Tuesday’s episode of her podcast, “The Morning After with Kelly Stafford.”
“I’m so proud of him, I’m so excited for him, it’s something he has worked his whole life for.”
Stafford spent the first 12 years of his NFL career in Detroit with the Lions. His and Kelly’s lives forever changed in January 2021, when the former first-overall draft pick was traded to Los Angeles, a move that came to fruition after a fated encounter with Rams coach Sean McVay in Mexico.
“If you would have told me when we were in Cabo, wondering what the future held, and then realizing the future was to be a Ram, if you were going to tell me we’d be in the Super Bowl, I definitely wouldn’t have believed you,” Kelly said Tuesday.
As the blockbuster deal was finalized, the Staffords celebrated with McVay and his fiancée, Veronika Khomyn, over dinner in Cabo. Kelly added on her podcast that McVay and Stafford, who celebrated his 34th birthday on Monday, make for a dynamic duo.
“He’s an awesome guy,” Kelly said of McVay. “Talk about a great team, those two are a great team, Matthew and Sean.”
Following the Rams’ NFC Championship win over the 49ers — which took place a year after the Stafford trade was first agreed to — McVay praised the quarterback for delivering in high-pressure moments.
“We went out and got him because we thought it was a great opportunity to get a player of his magnitude,” McVay said. “He’s elevated everyone around him. He’s made me a better coach, he’s made his teammates better. No moment’s too big for him, I can tell you that.”

Although Kelly is certainly anxious for Sunday, she’s hoping for a celebratory installment of her podcast Monday.
“Honestly, depending on the outcome, it might be a podcast on no sleep, it might be a podcast where I have a little alcohol in my system if we do take that victory — hoping for that,” Kelly said Wednesday in an interview with “Good Morning America.” “It’ll be entertaining, I’m sure.”
