Eduardo Escobar quickly winning over Mets’ clubhouse

PORT ST. LUCIE — Eduardo Escobar is still only in his first week with the Mets at spring training, but he is already making his presence felt — if not heard.

The veteran infielder was labeled as a strong clubhouse figure upon signing a two-year, $20 million deal in November, and so far, Escobar has been “as advertised,” according to Buck Showalter.

“Real calmness about him, doesn’t need to show everybody,” Showalter said Friday at Clover Park. “Those guys that are always trying to show everybody how good of a guy they are, aren’t always. You see people are drawn to him very quickly — much like Robbie [Cano] and a lot of our guys. Those type of guys bring a certain calmness through storms. We’re lucky to have him.”

The Mets hope the 33-year-old Escobar will also provide just as much value with his play.

Showalter said Friday that Escobar will get most of the reps at third base this spring — with J.D. Davis chipping in at third base, first base, left field and DH — but can move around if need be during the season. Last year, which he split between the Diamondbacks and Brewers, Escobar made 93 starts at third base, 31 at second base and 14 at first base. He has also started games at shortstop, left field and center field (once) during his 11-year MLB career.

“I prefer to play third base — that’s where I feel the most comfortable — but at the same time, if Buck needs me to play in a different position, that’s fine with me,” Escobar said through an interpreter. “As long as he trusts me and I’m able to give him that confidence that I can play at a high level at a different position, I think that’s what I’m going to do to the best of my abilities.”

Escobar, who hit .253 last season with 28 home runs and a 109 OPS-plus, said he is getting more comfortable and confident each day around his new teammates as he assimilates into a new clubhouse with high expectations.

“At the end of the day, you have to give it up to the front office for being able to do that because high-quality guys are always able to bring this clubhouse together and that’s where you get the best out of everyone here,” Escobar said. “This is what we want to do — go out there and play hard so the fans can really appreciate what they’re seeing on the field.”
