Will Smith announces resignation from Academy over Chris Rock slap

Will Smith resigned from the film Academy Friday in the face of possible suspension or expulsion from the organization for his on-stage slap of Chris Rock at the Oscars last weekend.

Smith said in a statement he would “fully accept any and all consequences for my conduct” imposed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Board of Governors.

“The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home,” Smith said in the statement.

“I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I am heartbroken.”

Smith apologized for taking attention away from other award winners, whose accomplishments were overshadowed by the so-called slap heard ‘round the world, he said. Minutes after his outburst, the Oscars crowd greeted him with a standing ovation as he delivered as he accepted the Best Actor award for his role in “King Richard.”

“I want to put the focus back on those who deserve attention for their achievements and allow the Academy to get back to the incredible work it does to support creativity and artistry in film,” Smith stated.

He concluded, “Change takes time and I am committed to doing the work to ensure that I never again allow violence to overtake reason.”

Smith was reportedly facing possible expulsion or suspension from The Academy over the incident – but decided not to give them the chance.

According to Hollywood Reporter columnist Scott Feinberg, Smith has surrendered his Oscars vote by resigning but reportedly will still be able to attend future ceremonies and even keep his Best Actor statue he took home Sunday.

But the Academy may still take action that could include barring the actor from certain events at its discretion like next year’s Oscars. Smith is already an early contender for his upcoming film “Emancipation.”

On Wednesday, the Academy said Smith refused to leave Oscars after his smackdown of Rock as the organization commenced disciplinary proceedings against the actor for violating its code of conduct. The review will take several weeks.

The Academy said Smith’s resignation had been accepted minutes after the actor’s letter went public. In a statement,  Academy President David Rubin indicated that the organization was still planning to continue its investigation.

“We will continue to move forward with our disciplinary proceedings against Mr. Smith for violations of the Academy’s Standards of Conduct, in advance of our next scheduled board meeting on April 18,” Rubin said.

An Academy source told The Post Smith’s resignation will not affect its conduct review of the incident.

Despite all of Smith’s apologies, the “Fresh Prince” star reportedly still has not reached out to Rock to apologize directly for hitting the comedian after he cracked a bald joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, who is diagnosed with alopecia.
