Queen Elizabeth to miss Friday’s jubilee service due to ‘discomfort’

Queen Elizabeth will miss Platinum Jubilee festivities Friday after experiencing “some discomfort” during kickoff events Thursday, Buckingham Palace said.

The 96-year-old monarch will skip the National Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral “with great reluctance” on the second day of the four-day celebration honoring her record-breaking 70 years on the throne.

“The Queen greatly enjoyed today’s Birthday Parade and flypast but did experience some discomfort,” the palace said in a statement.

“Taking into account the journey and activity required to participate in tomorrow’s national service of thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral, Her Majesty with great reluctance has concluded that she will not attend.”

Her Majesty is believed to have experienced episodic mobility issues during celebrations Thursday, which included a military parade and appearance on the balcony of Buckingham Palace for the Trooping the Colour, according to the UK Guardian.

But she still attend a beacon lighting event at Windsor Castle on Thursday evening, according to Buckingham Palace.

“The Queen is looking forward to participating in tonight’s beacon lighting event at Windsor Castle and would like to thank all those who made today such a memorable occasion,” Buckingham Palace said.
