Nick Kyrgios makes ‘Last Dance’ joke when asked about assault charge
Nick Kyrgios had an interesting response Tuesday to his recent legal situation, in which he is accused of assaulting ex-girlfriend Chiara Passari.
Hours after news.com.au reported that Kyrgios has been charged with assaulting Passari stemming from a Dec. 2021 incident, the Australian tennis star, 27, was asked about the allegations following a practice.
“I feel like I’m in ‘The Last Dance,'” Kyrgios said with a laugh, as a man beside him appeared to grin.
Kyrgios, who is slated to face Chile’s Cristian Garín in a quarterfinal match Wednesday at Wimbledon, referenced the Netflix docuseries that chronicles Michael Jordan and the 1990s Chicago Bulls.
Kyrgios’ lawyer, Jason Moffett, said his client takes the allegation “very seriously.”
“It’s in the context of a domestic relationship,” Moffett told Australia’s Canberra Times. “The nature of the allegation is serious, and Mr. Kyrgios takes the allegation very seriously. Given the matter is before the court … he doesn’t have a comment at this stage, but in the fullness of time we’ll issue a media release.”
Kyrgios is due in court in Canberra, Australia, on Aug. 2 and could face two years in prison if he is found guilty.
Kyrgios and Passari began dating in July 2020. They broke up after an argument last October that resulted in a police visit to their hotel in Adelaide — following an accusation from Passari that Kyrgios had cheated.
Kyrgios has since moved on with Costeen Hatzi — a Sydney-based blogger and social media influencer — and went public with the relationship on Instagram last December.
