Sammy Watkins has caught passes from Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson, among others, throughout his nine-year NFL career. But as the veteran receiver recently shared, his new quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, “is on a whole different level.”
When discussing the Packers quarterback, 38, in a new interview with Green Bay analyst Larry McCarren, Watkins — who signed a one-year deal with the team in April — was asked about his previous comments regarding Rodgers and Mahomes, in which he called the latter “unbelievably good.”
“He’s amazing,” Watkins, 29, said of Rodgers, the league’s reigning MVP. “How he controls the ball, how he puts everybody in place. I’ve been with a lot of quarterbacks, and I’ve never seen them carry themselves like Aaron Rodgers.”
Watkins, who spent three seasons in Kansas City from 2018-20, was approached last month by teammate Randall Cobb, who asked the million-dollar question: “Mahomes or Rodgers?”
“I’ve been with both of ’em and I’m going to be honest. I think Pat is unbelievably good, but A-Rod is on a whole different level,” Watkins told Cobb in late July.
Rodgers, who is gearing up for his 18th season in Green Bay, had quite the reaction to Watkins signing this past spring, after the Packers dealt his favorite target, fellow receiver Davante Adams, to the Raiders.
“Talked to Sammy Watkins last night. Excited about the signing. Can’t wait to get to work,” Rodgers is said to have texted pal Pat McAfee, who then shared that message on his show.
Before joining the Packers, Watkins played for the Ravens last season. Through 13 games, the former first-round pick had 27 receptions for 394 yards and a touchdown.
