69-year-old woman killed in hit-and-run crash outside Yankee Stadium
A city Department of Correction worker was killed in a hit-and-run crash outside Yankee Stadium early Thursday, authorities and a relative said.
Cathy Garcia, 69, was driving a 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander south on River Avenue around 5:15 a.m. when a BMW X6, heading west on East 161st Street in Concourse, slammed into her vehicle at the intersection, cops said.
Garcia, who was on her way to work, was rushed to Lincoln Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
The BMW driver, along with two other occupants, bolted from their ride and remained in the wind by the afternoon, cops said.
Garcia was only a few blocks away from her home when her car was struck.
Her son-in-law Jamel Wright said the family was shattered by the news of her death, adding that she was the family’s matriarch.
“It’s devastating to get a call that the person that you truly love and admire and respect, you know, the leader of our families [was] killed in a horrific car accident and then the people ran off,” Wright said.
“[She was] a wonderful woman, … the life of the party, great grandmother, great friend.”
Wright said his mother-in-law was an intake officer at the DOC in the medical department where she assisted new hires.
“She took a ton of pride in doing that,” Wright said. “She would tell us about all the wonderful people she would encounter and the fact that she was able to help young people become gainfully employed in a real job with the Department of Correction.”
The BMW driver and passengers allegedly left behind 12 catalytic converters in the trunk of the BMW, police said.
Photos from the scene show some of the devices in the street as cops investigated the taped-off scene.
Catalytic converter thefts have accelerated by a whopping 269 percent citywide so far this year, new data shows.
“I mean it seems like crime is rampant [in the city] right now,” Wright said, regarding the discovery of the catalytic converters at the scene. “Hopefully, Mayor Adams has a real plan.”
