Six people on Long Island were injured after a boat explosion rocked the canal near Babylon’s Sumpwams Avenue on Friday afternoon, News 12 reported.
The six people who were onboard when the incident occurred were all hospitalized, with one needing to be airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital, fire officials told News 12.
One witness told the outlet they saw one person who looked to be severely injured.
“We heard an explosion. You can feel it in the chest. It was a big one, and then we can out of the house to see what was going on.”
The 2nd assistant Babylon Fire chief, Bill Sadousky, told News 12 that the six people who were on the boat during the explosion were already on shore when he arrived on the scene. “When I got there…the boat was in the middle of the canal on fire, and my fire boat was suppressing the fire.”
Debris from the sailing vessel was scattered across the canal, showing the magnitude of the blast.
The wreckage of the boat explosion has been cleared from the canal by officials.
Police are currently still investigating what caused the boat to explode.
