Carol Burnett trended and fans thought she was dead — but ‘SNL’ was to blame

Funnywoman Carol Burnett was trending on Monday afternoon, but concerned fans weren’t laughing — at first.

It turns out that the 89-year-old’s name was mentioned so many times on Twitter in response to a tweet from “Saturday Night Live,” asking fans who they want to host during the upcoming season, that she became a trending topic on the site, but others thought it was because she may have been pronounced dead.

That is untrue, and many Twitter users breathed a sigh of relief when they realized she was trending for the right reasons.

“Carol Burnett was trending and y’all scared the hell outta me,” one user exhaled. “They just want her to host SNL. How in the world has this comedic genius not been given this platform.”

“I saw Carol Burnett trending and almost had a heart attack. Fortunately, it’s just because people want her to host SNL, which, I mean: HELL YEAH,” another wrote.

“Seeing Carol Burnett trending and it’s because people want her to host SNL. Shew. Was going to have a bit of a sad moment there,” another voiced.

From 1967 to 1978, she hosted “The Carol Burnett Show,” which was groundbreaking for women in comedy. Burnett has six Emmys, seven Golden Globe awards, a Tony, a Grammy and even a Presidential Medal of Freedom, but has never been invited to Studio 8H.

Larry King couldn’t believe she had never hosted the show during a 2016 interview with Burnett.

“You’re kidding. They’ve never had Carol?” a stunned King asked a serious Burnett.

“Would you host it? You should host it,” he continued.

“If I was asked,” she smiled.

One Twitter user pointed out that Burnett would be the oldest “SNL” host if selected — beating out Betty White, who hosted in 2010 at age 88.

“Carol Burnett!!! MAKE IT HAPPEN!!,” another cheered.

“She’s long overdue. C’mon,” one user advocated for the “Annie” star.

“Carol Burnett is 89 years old and has never hosted SNL. NBC end this madness now,” another ordered the network.

The Post has contacted reps for Burnett and “SNL” for comment.

Another popular pick — based on one tweet that has more than 3,800 likes at the time of publication — is “Only Murders in the Building” stars Martin Short, Steve Martin, and Selena Gomez.

“West Side Story” star Rachel Anne Zegler even advocated for herself by replying to the show’s tweet, simply asking “please.”
