NYC Council confuses Yom Kippur and Hanukkah in botched social media post

The City Council seemingly confused sacred Jewish holidays on Tuesday as it wished the Big Apple a “Happy Yom Kippur” — a day of atonement — in a social media post that prominently featured a Hanukkah menorah.

The Council quickly deleted and apologized for the post — but not before New Yorkers had their fun with it.

“OYYYY @NYCCouncil,” wrote journalist Jacob Kornbluh, whose post about the error went viral. “👇 (Yom Kippur is not Hanukkah 🕎 and the Day of Atonement is not necessarily “happy”)”.

“They forgot to include a picture of Matzot!,” joked Joel Rubin.

By 5 pm, Kornbluh’s tweet had been reshared more than 100 times and liked by more than 1,000 accounts.

The Council replaced the deleted post with one that included a graphic with a somber blue background and the traditional greeting of “G’mar Chatima Tova.”

“We acknowledge the error of our previous post on #YomKippur and thank all those who brought it to our attention,” the Council said in a tweet to Kornbluh apologizing.

“We sincerely hope all New Yorkers observing this Day of Atonement have an easy and meaningful fast.”
