101-61.
What a remarkable regular season for the Mets. They finished with the second-best record in franchise history. While last weekend in Atlanta was brutal and they lost out on the NL East crown, you just have to applaud the Braves for edging them out. Buck Showalter and these Mets deserve their flowers for one of the best seasons in the history of the 61-year franchise.
But now it’s time to prove themselves in October. It’s not going to be easy as they take on the Padres in the best-of-three Wild-Card Series this weekend at Citi Field. San Diego had their number in the regular season, winning four out of six games. But these are two different teams from the ones we saw in June and July. Both have made key additions that could end up making or breaking the series. It should be an electric atmosphere in Queens.
To look back at the memorable 2022 Mets regular season and preview the NL Wild Card Series, we bring you a special playoff edition of the “Amazin’ But True” podcast with Nelson Figueroa and me. We were joined in the second half of the show by SNY Mets field reporter Steve Gelbs to preview the playoffs, recap the season and relive his favorite moments being a part of it all.
Amazin’ But True Podcast with Jake Brown & Nelson Figueroa:
- MEMORABLE REGULAR SEASON: There were so many special moments from this Mets season. A no-hitter, comebacks, fun postgame interviews and so many fun storylines — including Jeff McNeil’s new car. The NL batting title for McNeil means Francisco Lindor is getting him a car. Pete Alonso was tied for the MLB lead in RBI with 131. Edwin Diaz was pivotal. Adam Ottavino and Trevor Williams were unsung heroes. Eduardo Escobar came around in September when the Mets needed him most. Lindor set records.
- METS-PADRES WILD CARD: Max Scherzer takes the ball for Game 1. If they win Game 1, they should go with Chris Bassitt in Game 2 and hope they can save Jacob deGrom for Game 1 of a potential NLDS against the Dodgers. Citi Field will be on fire for these games. It’s been six years and the fans are ready to root this team on to a long October playoff run. This is a tough matchup for them, but the Mets are still the better team. We are taking the Mets in a two-game sweep.
Steve Gelbs Interview:
SNY Mets field reporter, SNY Jets pre and postgame host
- PLAYOFF ROTATION: If the Mets win Game 1, they have to go with Chris Bassitt in Game 2. Need to set your rotation to get Scherzer and deGrom to pitch potentially three times against the Dodgers in the NLDS.
- DH SITUATION: Francisco Alvarez should get a chance to go up against lefties in the Wild Card. Daniel Vogelbach will go against righties. This team badly needs Starling Marte. He gives them everything they need.
- PREDICTION: They are going to show up in a big way against the Padres.
- FAVORITE METS MOMENT: The comeback vs. Phillies was the best moment this season. Wilmer Flores’ walk-off homer in 2015 was his favorite Mets moment since joining SNY.
