Draymond Green apologizes for fight with Jordan Poole at Warriors practice

Golden State Warriors star forward Draymond Green apologized to the team Thursday a day after a fight broke out at practice between Green and teammate Jordan Poole, according to Warriors general manager Bob Myers.

Poole practiced Thursday and Green did not. Myers said any discipline would be handled internally. Head coach Steve Kerr said that Green will also be away from the team on Friday and will rejoin them Saturday. Green is not expected to miss any games for the fight.

“Everybody’s fine,” Myers said. “Look, it’s the NBA, professional sports, these things happen. Nobody likes it. We don’t condone it, but it happened. Draymond apologized to the team this morning, Jordan was there in the room, I was there in the room with the team, the coaches, the players and we heard that.”

Green threw a punch at Poole during Wednesday’s practice, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. The two players had been yelling at each other before some pushing, and then Green swung and made contact with Poole.

“It’s unfortunate, I’m not going to deny it,” Myers said. “It’ll take some time to move through, but we’ll move through it and move forward, and I’m confident that we will. We’ve got a good team, we’ve got good leadership, we’ve got some guys that have been here a long time.

Myers doesn’t expect the incident to have an effect on his team.

“First, like anything, you want to make sure everybody’s OK; that’s the No. 1 thing,” Myers said. “After that, nobody likes these things, so how do you move forward? There’s a process to these things, there’s apologies, there’s time.”

Both Poole and forward Andrew Wiggins said during the Warriors’ media day that their contract situation was not the top thing on their minds heading into the preseason. Myers said he doesn’t believe the fight was about who might or might not be paid.

Poole’s agents are in discussions with Myers about a contract extension for the fourth-year guard ahead of the Oct. 17 deadline. Poole had a fantastic postseason in the Warriors’ championship run, shooting over 50 percent from the field and 39.1 percent from three, averaging 17 points a game.
