Giants’ Daniel Jones on track to play against Packers amid ankle injury

Daniel Jones isn’t just a speedy runner. He’s also a “fast healer.”

Described that way during his rookie season with the Giants by then-head coach Pat Shurmur, Jones is living up to his reputation this week as he recovers from a sprained ankle at a pace that appears to have him on track to play Sunday against the Packers. He looked comfortable moving in the pocket and throwing on the run during the open portion of Thursday’s practice, especially compared to the limp he had Sunday against the Bears.

The Giants’ plan after Jones looked “good” in Wednesday’s practice was to increase his reps count, head Brian Daboll said. Jones looked “no worse” when he reported Thursday morning.

“He was running around and doing everything that we are asking him to do from a practice standpoint,” offensive coordinator Mike Kafka said.

The biggest change at quarterback was that backup Tyrod Taylor (concussion) was off to the side of the practice field with trainers, suggesting he has reached Step 3 of the league-mandated five-step protocol. “Making progress” is how Daboll explained it.

Jones, Taylor and Davis Webb will travel to London. Webb will be elevated from the practice squad if he is needed to start or back up one of the other two.

“You want to make sure that we have options for whatever may happen,” Kafka said.

WR Kadarius Toney (hamstring) took a step backwards from limited participation Wednesday to no participation Thursday. CB Cor’Dale Flott (calf), WR Kenny Golladay (knee), DL Henry Mondeaux (ankle), OLB Azeez Ojulari (calf) and Taylor were the other non-participants. All except Taylor were left home from London. That list accounts for four of the seven game-day inactives (excluding Mondreau, who is on the practice squad.)

CB Aaron Robinson (knee) is on injured reserve for at least the next four games and it is “yet to be determined” if his injury is season-ending, Daboll said. Daboll did not rule out that Golladay (reportedly a sprained MCL) could wind up on injured reserve, too.

WR Richie James (ankle), S Julian Love (concussion), CB Nick McCloud (hamstring), CB Fabian Moreau (foot), OT Evan Neal (neck), WR Wan’Dale Robinson (knee) and DL Leonard Williams (knee) were limited participants.

So, it appears Love, who was the upback in punt drills, has progressed to Step 4 of the concussion protocol. James was upgraded from a non-participant on Wednesday and he and Moreau — the two newest additions to the injury report — “will be good” to play, Daboll said.

The Giants only have two fully healthy receivers on the active roster: David Sills and Darius Slayton. Marcus Johnson, who played one snap as a practice squad call-up last week, is expected to play again.

Robinson was in special teams drills and later had his own drill time with receivers coach Mike Groh.

“Most of the days I’ve just been in the back running and trying to stay in shape, so it felt good to get out there and actually do a little bit,” Robinson said. “Everybody is trying to figure out what we think is right all around, whether that be for me or for the team at the same time.”

Robinson said he has never missed time early in a season.

“It’s really frustrating knowing I’d love to be doing everything I can to help us win,” Robinson said.
