Denver sports anchors apologize to viewers after Broncos debacle: ‘I feel bad’
If you stayed up to watch the entire Broncos-Colts game on Thursday night, which agonizingly ended in a 12-9 Indianapolis victory in overtime, you probably deserve an apology.
Luckily, sports anchors Troy Renck and Nick Rothschild of ABC Denver7 were there to give it to you, as they laid into the Broncos following another miserable loss.
“First off, Troy, I feel the need to just apologize to the viewers,” Rothschild said. “I know we didn’t play, we didn’t really even run this broadcast, but the fact that you had to watch that on our air, I feel bad. I was here and I didn’t even want to watch it. Where do we begin?”
“Listen, it burns the retinas, it was that awful,” Renck responded. “Both teams stunk offensively.”
In the game – the Broncos’ third in primetime matchup in the first five weeks – neither team scored a touchdown. Denver went 0-of-4 in the red zone, continuing the putrid run its been on to start the season when in scoring territory. Currently, it is 32nd out of 32 in the NFL in red zone scoring percentage.
Russell Wilson, who the Broncos signed to a $245 million extension before he even played a down with the team, was brutal yet again, throwing two interceptions in the end zone. On the game’s final play with a chance to win it, Wilson missed K.J. Hamler wide open in the end zone, instead throwing incomplete in the direction of Courtland Sutton. Hamler was visibly furious after the play, slamming his helmet in frustration.
“Russell Wilson made two of the most face-palm throws I’ve seen in recent years,” Renck said.
To be fair, the Colts and quarterback Matt Ryan weren’t much better. Ryan also threw two interceptions, not doing much to lift the rating of a Colts offense that entered the game dead last in Football Outsiders’ offensive DVOA statistic. Still, it was enough to get the job done.
Luckily for NFL fans, the Broncos are back in primetime next week, when they take on the Los Angeles Chargers on “Monday Night Football.”
