WARE, England — It is getting to the point at which it is difficult to figure out just how many hamstring issues Giants receiver Kadarius Toney is dealing with.
Toney did not make the trip across the Atlantic Ocean with the team. He was left home because he cannot run sufficiently enough to play Sunday against the Packers at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. Toney was making a push to play after he missed the past two games with a strained hamstring. That injury was healing nicely and he was in line to return. But he “tweaked” his other hamstring during practice Wednesday, head coach Brian Daboll said on Friday and that again shut down the injury prone second-year wide receiver.
The latest strain is thought to be the third different hamstring injury in a short period of time for Toney, which raises the question: Why is he aggravating the same issues over and over again?
“We look at everything,” Daboll said before a walk-through on the field on the grounds of Hanbury Manor Hotel and Country Club, where the Giants are staying during their time here. “I feel bad for him. He was running around, he was getting a lot better and unfortunately tweaked it a little bit. Get him treatment and as ready as we can.”
Toney missed time in training camp this summer with what is believed to be the first hamstring injury he experienced. Sunday will mark the third consecutive game he has missed and there are no indications his latest tweak will heal in time for the Week 6 game against the Ravens. A stay on injured reserve — which would mean Toney would miss at least four games — was not ruled out by Daboll.
“I think [general manager] Joe [Schoen] and I talk about a lot of things, we revisit things each week,” Daboll said.
Landon Collins, newly signed to the practice squad, made his own way here to join his new team. Given his pedigree, the anticipation is it will not take long for the 28-year-old Collins to be promoted to the active roster. That will not come in time for this game, though.
“He just got here,” Daboll said. “He’s got a lot to learn in terms of how we do things, not [only] play book but how we do ‘em as an organization.”
Safety Julian Love advanced through the concussion protocol and will play on Sunday.
DL Leonard Williams missed the past two games (the first time he had missed a game in his career), while dealing with a sprained knee, but it looks like he will be back. He is listed as questionable and is expected to play, although he will not receive his usual heavy workload.
“It would be a big boost,’’ fellow defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence said. “He’s a good help in the inside. He’s a dominant super-star player. Just to have another guy that they have to game plan and focus on. That’s my road dog.’’
In addition to Toney, also ruled out for the game are WR Kenny Golladay, WR Wan’Dale Robinson, LB Azeez Oljulari, CB Cor’Dale Flott, QB Tyrod Taylor and DL Henry Mondreaux. They will make up the seven inactive players designated for the game on Sunday.
